Diagonal & Diamond Pattern Concrete Grooves
Shatto Milk Company started as a family farm over 100 yrs. ago. In the early 2000s, as Barb Shatto states, they decided they wanted to do something different. They decided to change the way they delivered milk. Like many, their milk was sold to big corporations. Their decision was to sell directly to the consumer by selling their milk to the grocery stores in Kansas City and St Joe. Starting with just over 80 cows, everyone was/is thrilled with the fresh milk that gets to the grocery store in as little as 12 hours of the cow being milked.
Shatto offers a wide variety of flavors, not to mention they're sought after seasonal flavors which makes them very unique. Some of the flavors are root beer, orange dreamsicle, cotton candy, banana, and the list goes on. My favorite is the coffee flavored milk, oh yeah and the chocolate is like no other.
We were very excited to be invited to the farm to do some barn floor grooving to help take care of some of the challenges they were having with cows slipping. There is no doubt they care about the cows. When we arrived at the farm we were so wowed by the facility. We were taken on an Amazing tour and of course, we enjoyed sampling the many flavors of milk.
We then went out to take a look and analyze the cow movement and pattern as well as to talk with the staff to see just where they are having challenges. After sitting down and coming up with a cost-effective solution we decided that diagonal grooves in the holding yard with some diamond pattern grooves in areas that they were doing some pushing and shoving. We then grooved the diamond pattern in the holding area of the milk parlor. The drover’s lane and return alley are outside so we did a diagonal groove with the diamond pattern groove at the ends and where they turn. Many of these grooves also helped with water drainage.
As Staff and Herdsman observed how the cows felt so much more secure and confident they decided to invest and have the barns done as well. In the free stall barns, they had existing straight grooves that had been boat floated in and lost effectiveness. We did the diagonal groove over the existing straight.
Our experience at Shatto Milk Co. was so much fun. The staff was helpful beyond expectations as well as everyone being so accommodating, (like making sure I had my coffee milk in the morning).
If you are ever passing through Osborn, Missouri be sure to make it one of your stops. From the hands-on tours to the Amazing gift shop, it is a must see.
Thank you Shatto Milk Co. for trusting Midwest Grooving and welcoming us to your world.
